Severe Staph Infections Linked to Unsafe Injection Practices in Arizona and Delaware

In a recent (July 13) issue of MMWR, the CDC has reported that 10 patients in Arizona and Delaware have contracted severe methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (staph) or methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections after receiving care at outpatient facilities where practitioners improperly performed injections, specifically reusing medication from single-dose/single-use medication vials for multiple patients.

Israel, Palestine Join Forces in Containing MRSA Bacteria Spreading

The international medical community has funneled greater resources into researching ways of preventing MRSA since 1999, when four children died in Chicago after coming into contact with the bacteria in their community. Prior to these deaths, it was thought that the bacteria attacked only in hospital settings. Since then, the American virulent strain has been dubbed USA300, or "superbug."

A full disinfectant cleaning is going on at the Mechanicville Elementary School today after a confirmed case of MRSA was reported at the school on Tuesday.
School officials do not believe the infected person was contagious while in school but the bathrooms, classrooms, and doorknobs are all being disinfected to ensure the students and staffs safety.
